Artist Statement
Galen was a renowned Greek physician (129 – 216 CE) who served the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. He refined the recipe for Theriac, a complex antidote comprised of medicinal herbs and other ingredients. This painting imagines Galen’s workbench during his refinement of Theriac, with his recipe jotted down in ancient Greek surrounded by materials including black opium bricks, peppercorn, viper’s flesh and cinnamon sticks.
