Artist Statement
There is extensive archeological evidence for the use of opium poppy in the Alps of prehistoric Europe, beginning in the Neolithic era. Traces of herbs and seeds, including those of opium poppy, were found near the remains of ‘Iceman’, a frozen late-Neolithic mummy found in the Ötztal Alps. This painting depicts Iceman’s murder in the mountains, which likely occurred ~5300 BP by an arrow wound and traumatic head injury. At the same time, this work represents a study of Peter Paul Rubens’ Cain Slaying Abel (c. 1608-09).
Original $3000. Prints from $200, please inquire.
