Artist Statement
In 1806, the German pharmacist Friedrich Sertürner isolated a pure substance from opium that he named morphine, after Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams. Morpheus is the son of Hypnos (god of sleep), and is known for his ability to appear in dreams in human form to deliver messages. He is depicted here alongside an antique Asian opium smoking tray.
