Artist Statement

This painting was inspired by my visit in 2011 to the Garden of Gethsemane, at the foot of the Mount of Olives in East Jerusalem. Radiocarbon dating suggests this garden’s olive trees (Olea europaea) are ~900 years old, likely planted by crusaders who took possession of the city in 1099 to establish the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, which ended in 1291. The indisputable dietary benefits of olive oil are owed in part to oleic acid, which promotes heart health as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. This plant possesses far-reaching socio-political significance and remains integral to the traditions of several faiths and cultures.

Original $2000 (framed). Prints from $200, please inquire.
